30 Things To Do When You’re Bored

Ever since I started properly blogging, I hoped my words were reaching someone out there. I know that blogging is not about the numbers, but I couldn’t help being excited about a hint or two that people were actually reading my writing. It took a lot of wistful staring at the stats page and swallowing my fear to talk to veteran bloggers and, of course, actually posting content (more or less) regularly.

And a year or two later, there are suddenly 300 of you.

Granted, some of those 300 are probably not even real people (robots or spammers or robot spammers?). And yes, it’s not all about the numbers. But regardless of all that, behind that number is an indication that at least some people are taking the time to read a flash fiction here or a literary rant there. And that makes me very happy.

So, in honour of that, I’ve decided to make a second part to my post popular blog post, 16 Things To Do When You’re Bored. I present to you:

300 Things To Do When You’re Bored

  1. Read old emails
  2. Write letters you’ll never send
  3. Change the lyrics of a song with random words (Happy birthday to potato)
  4. Make a deck of cards
  5. Teach yourself some card tricks
  6. Look at the world through a prism

  7. Try to count to ten without thinking of anything else
  8. Write a story backwards
  9. Learn morse code
  10. Make up names for imaginary places
  11. Think of words you can say without your tongue touching the roof of your mouth
  12. Compliment someone
  13. Take a walk down memory lane
  14. Take a walk down an actual lane

  16. Edit a photo beyond recognition
  17. Draw without lifting pen off paper
  18. Chat with Cleverbot

Have a deep, meaningful conversation about life (the first comment is mine, Cleverbot’s response in blue)
  19. Listen to a casette rewind
  20. Write a terzanelle
  21. Find words made entirely of vowels or consonants. Or, make up your own (e.g. uioiu: a fruit that looks deceptively like a pear, but is exceptionally bitter unless eaten before dawn)
  22. Take turns creating a story
  23. Give your earphones a clean (seriously, those things can get germ-y)
  24. Experiment with camera settings

Not sure how I did this. Can you guess what it’s a photo of?
  25. List words that don’t look like they’re actual words (e.g. syzygy)
  26. Make some bookmarks (shameless promotion of my own content)
  27. Type/write something with eyes closed. Make a story with it.
  28. Draw people in cartoon form
  29. Re-imagine things (e.g. the moon = a sphere of half melted butter on a pan)
  30. Come up with a list of things to do when you’re bored

And that’s it! If any of these help you beat a moment of boredom, let me know. Thanks for reading, and until next time!

As a person who is constantly trying to find things to do, this post is my favorite of the day! So many clever things that had never crossed my mind. A few of them I’d tried before, and were a success on my list of things to do when I’m bored, such as touch typing. I’ll definitely give #s 16, 17 and 23 a try.

Thank you! I’ve very much the same, and I’m glad I could help. 🙂 I was struggling for ideas by the end, but making this list was a good remedy for boredom, too. XD Let me know how trying those out goes!

I am ALWAYS checking my email when I’m bored (and even when I’m busy); my friends joke that it’s easier to contact me through my email than through texting because I just check the former that often. As for giving the earbuds a clean, I think that’s greatly important! Those things are germy and I tend to throw them everywhere. 😅
