This week’s photo challenge is Humanity. In high school, I volunteered at a charity called Team Peru (TPDK). Team Peru works with another charity, Kiya Survivors, to help children with special needs in Peru. I went to Peru as part of the TPDK travelling team in 2012. We visited one of the homes set up by both charities for the mistreated children.
The girl in this photo is called Maria. Initially she was serious but started laughing at the sound of my camera’s shutter.
I chose this photo because of her smile, which shines bright despite her dark past. Her smile reminds me of the power of love and shows that a little kindness can go a long way. It helps me remember that humanity is capable of doing good. Maria still has bad days, but at least now she has a reason to smile.
